Role Overview: We are seeking a highly motivated lab manager who will be responsible for the overall management, organization, and coordination of the mass spectrometry laboratory. The successful candidate will manage the day-to-day operations of the mass spectrometry lab including but not limited to automated sample preparation platforms, liquid chromatography systems and mass spectrometry instruments. This role requires a strong background in mass spectrometry and laboratory management, excellent organizational skills, and the ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Laboratory Operations:
    • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the mass spectrometry laboratory.
    • Develop and implement standard operating procedures (SOPs) for lab activities.
    • Ensure compliance with all safety regulations, institutional policies, and best practices.
    • Coordinate and schedule laboratory activities to optimize workflow and resource utilization.
  2. Equipment Management:
    • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry instruments.
    • Perform regular calibration and preventive maintenance of equipment.
    • Coordinate with vendors and service providers for equipment repairs and maintenance contracts.
  3. Inventory and Procurement:
    • Manage inventory of lab supplies, reagents, and consumables.
    • Coordinate procurement of necessary materials and equipment, ensuring timely availability.
    • Monitor and control laboratory expenses to stay within budgetary constraints.
  4. Quality Assurance:
    • Implement and monitor quality control procedures to ensure data integrity and reproducibility.
    • Conduct regular audits to maintain high standards of laboratory practice.
    • Address and resolve any quality issues or deviations from standard procedures.
  5. Documentation and Reporting:
    • Maintain accurate and detailed records of experiments, protocols, and equipment maintenance.
    • Prepare and present reports on laboratory activities, progress, and outcomes to the extended team.
    • Ensure proper documentation for compliance and regulatory purposes.
    • Identify opportunities for process improvements and implement changes to enhance lab efficiency and productivity.
    • Stay updated with the latest advancements in mass spectrometry and related technologies.
    • Foster a culture of continuous learning and innovation within the laboratory team.
  6. Research Support:
    • Work closely with scientists in the team supporting their project.
    • Perform workflows for sample preparation including protein digestion, peptide labeling, and sample clean-up.
    • LCMS setup performance evaluation by running QC samples and data processing.

How you will get here:

Education:

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in analytical chemistry, biology, or related field with 5+ years of industrial experience is required (Master degree with 2+ years of experience is preferred).

Experience:

  • At least 5-year relevant industry and/or academic experience in mass spectrometry, proteomics, or another relevant field.
  • Familiarity with Thermo Orbitrap instrumentation and experience in MS-based proteomics is preferred.
  • Ability to learn and assist in the development of new protocols/technologies.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
  • Strong time management and communication skills (written and verbal).

Compensation and Benefits:

The salary range estimated for this position based in California is $72,000.00–$108,000.00. This position may also be eligible to receive a variable annual bonus based on company, team, and/or individual performance results in accordance with company policy.
