No Position Purpose: The Director of Career & Life Design Coaching leads a team dedicated to providing high-impact, student-centered career coaching through a design thinking approach. This role ensures that career and life design coaching is personalized, innovative, and embedded into the student experience, extending beyond undergraduates to support alumni and lifelong learners. The director oversees the development of career communities, fostering industry-aligned networks and affinity-based support systems that connect students with mentors, employers, and relevant resources. Responsibilities: Leads the development and implementation of a student-centered, design thinking approach to career coaching. Supervises, trains, and mentors career coaching staff, ensuring best practices in coaching, motivational interviewing, and career advising. Provides ongoing professional development and implements coaching assessments to enhance service delivery. Partners with faculty, centers, and college departments to embed career education into courses, supporting experiential learning and interdisciplinary career pathways. Collaborates with faculty, student affairs, identity-based offices, and external organizations to expand career access for first-generation, underrepresented, and diverse student populations. Develops programs and resources that promote equitable access to career opportunities. Collaborates with campus partners to identify emerging needs and opportunities, piloting innovative programs that support students’ evolving career and life goals. Stays current on trends in career development, higher education, and the future of work to ensure coaching remains relevant and responsive. Required Qualifications: Master’s degree in counseling, higher education, career development, organizational leadership, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Five or more years of progressive experience in career coaching, career development, student success, or a related area, with demonstrated expertise in life design methodologies, design thinking, and career exploration frameworks. Experience supervising and training professional staff, including mentoring and developing career coaches or advisors. Strong knowledge of career coaching methodologies, such as design thinking, motivational interviewing, and student development theories. Proven ability to integrate career education into academic experiences through faculty partnerships and interdisciplinary collaboration. Experience working with diverse student populations, including first-generation, underrepresented, and international students, with a commitment to equity and inclusion. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present to diverse audiences, facilitate workshops, and engage with institutional leadership. Ability to analyze career trends, student engagement data, and assessment outcomes to inform program development and strategy. Strong project management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and initiatives effectively. Preferred Qualifications: Seven or more years of progressive experience in career development, student success, or academic advising, with a strong foundation in life design, design thinking, and experiential learning models. Experience developing and scaling career coaching programs, including training career coaches and implementing professional development initiatives. Demonstrated success in partnering with faculty to integrate career development into academic courses, co-curricular experiences, or first-year seminars. Experience designing career initiatives for diverse student populations, including first-gen, underrepresented, and international students, with a focus on equity-driven career education. Familiarity with industry trends and emerging technologies in career development, including AI-driven career tools, competency-based learning, and the future of work. Experience conducting coaching assessments and program evaluations to measure student outcomes and engagement. Strong background in relationship-building with external stakeholders, including employers, alumni networks, and industry professionals. Certification or advanced training in design thinking, coaching (ICF or similar), motivational interviewing, or career development models.
