This exciting opportunity will allow you to help shape the next generation of aerospace enthusiasts through hands-on experiences in rocketry, drones, coding, and robotics, all while connecting campers to exclusive facility tours.
About the Role:
As a Coding & Robotics Instructor, you will create and deliver a dynamic curriculum designed to introduce campers (ages 11-16) to the world of programming, robotics, and cutting-edge technology. Your lessons will incorporate real-world applications from and other aerospace agencies, fostering creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. You'll guide campers through exciting hands-on projects and challenges, helping them develop skills that will prepare them for future careers in technology and aerospace.
This position will begin remotely with occasional travel to Wallops Island, VA, and transition to onsite work from May 27 - August 8, 2025. Room and board will be provided during the camp. The total duration of this position is approximately 4 months.
Key Responsibilities:
Curriculum Design & Development:
Design and develop engaging lessons on coding, robotics, and automation for various age groups (ages 11-16).
Incorporate real-world aerospace examples and integrate emerging technologies to create a hands-on learning experience.
Collaborate with other instructors to develop interdisciplinary projects that connect coding, robotics, physics, and engineering.
Stay current with trends in coding and robotics to enhance the camper experience.
Instruction & Facilitation:
Lead interactive workshops and coding labs focused on programming basics, including Python and block coding, as well as robotics using LEGO Spike Prime and Arduino.
Guide campers through building and programming robots, while fostering teamwork and creativity.
Organize robotics competitions where campers can apply their skills to complete challenges.
Offer personalized feedback and troubleshooting support, ensuring a safe and engaging learning environment.
Mentorship & Career Guidance:
Serve as a role model and mentor, sharing your expertise and encouraging campers to explore careers in technology and space exploration.
Help campers connect with industry professionals and explore opportunities for internships or tech challenges.
Camp Operations & Management:
Coordinate with camp directors to ensure the camp runs smoothly, providing support and solutions as needed.
Maintain clear communication with staff and actively participate in team meetings.
Camper Safety & Well-Being:
Adhere to camp procedures, safety protocols, and emergency response plans.
Monitor camper health and behavior, working with the team to address any concerns.
Ensure a positive and inclusive environment for campers.
Community Engagement:
Build strong, professional relationships with industry partners and the broader community.
Represent the camp in a positive light, fostering enthusiasm and support.
Resource & Materials Management:
Oversee inventory and organization of materials and equipment needed for the coding and robotics curriculum.
Assist with the logistics and coordination of resources for camp activities.
Required Qualifications:
Experience with programming languages such as Python, C++, Scratch, or similar.
Familiarity with robotics platforms (LEGO Mindstorms, Arduino, Raspberry Pi, etc.).
Prior experience teaching or mentoring youth in coding, robotics, or STEM.
Strong communication skills and the ability to explain complex concepts clearly.
Excellent organizational skills and ability to work both independently and in a team.
Current CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
Physical ability to assist campers in emergencies and maintain supervision.
Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Must be available for the entire 4-month camp period.
U.S. Citizenship and ability to pass a background check and drug screen.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to stand, walk, and use hands for tasks such as operating tools or assisting campers.
Ability to lift up to 25 pounds and perform other physical tasks.
Good vision, hearing, and physical stamina for camp duties.
