Founded in 1935, Alcoholics Anonymous World Services (A.A.W.S.) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization and an international fellowship of people who have had a drinking problem. The Alcoholics Anonymous fellowship is nonprofessional, self-supporting, multiracial, apolitical, and available almost everywhere. The General Service Office (GSO) in the Morningside Heights neighborhood of New York City employs approximately 85 people (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic) and serves over 2 million members in the US and Canada.
Our mission at the GSO is to support carrying the message of Alcoholics Anonymous to the still-suffering alcoholic by providing services to A.A. members, groups, and others; publishing and distributing A.A literature, preserving A.A. history, and sharing A.A.’s collective experience. Not only is our team incredibly mission-driven, but also tremendously supportive of each other as both colleagues and individuals.
JOB SUMMARY:
The Archives Research Assistant reports to the Archives Director and is part of the Archives team which is responsible for the collection, organization, description, and preservation of the material of historical importance pertaining to Alcoholics Anonymous. The Archives Research Assistant is responsible for routine filing, scanning, and special projects as assigned in the Archives department. The Research Assistant also provides internal and external customer service by assisting with information queries.
RESPONSIBILITIES :
Filing and organizing important archival and manuscript materials.
Scanning historical archival documentation.
Assisting with preparation of inventory and data entry.
Answering internal and external questions in person, by phone, and electronically.
Maintaining proper care and maintenance of all materials handled.
Performing clerical functions related to Archives activities as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS :
Strong research and organizational skills.
Strong attention to detail.
Excellent communication skills, both writing and verbal.
A strong desire to be helpful, great customer service skills.
Demonstrated ability to work independently.
Proficiency in the Microsoft Office platform and programs.
Critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, especially for sourcing and organizing historical materials.
Knowledge of data entry and record-keeping for archival collections.
Experience with other database systems is helpful.
QUALIFICATIONS :
1 – 2 years of experience working in a library, archival, or historical research setting required; this could be through internships, volunteer work, or previous employment.
Bachelor’s degree in History, or similar studies and/or certificates in Archives or Library Science preferred.
Research skills using both digital and physical repositories.
Experience with archival database systems is preferred.
Strong interest in history and a commitment to preserving cultural material.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS :
Availability to work in person a minimum of four days per week.
Ability to lift up to 40 pounds.
Ability to read typewritten, handwritten, and digital documents.
Position works closely with material that may contain mold and dust. Working with exposure to hazards.
Ability to handle fragile objects.
Some weekend or evening work may be required during busy times, General Service Board weekends, or Conference.
Ability to sit at a desk for a 7-hour workday with breaks.
Ability to use a computer including tasks such as typing and using software and the ability to read and interpret data on a computer screen for extended periods.
Ability to work in an indoor office setting with controlled climate conditions.
Tolerance to moderate noise levels typical of an office setting.
LOCATION :
This position is in the Morningside Heights neighborhood of New York City, we currently work a hybrid schedule of 4 days in office and 1 day remote with occasional additional in office days.
PAY & BENEFITS :
This is a non-exempt position with an annual pay rate of $52,000 plus approved overtime.
